I've been told it shouldn't matter. But as one in a handful of black professionals in the outdoor recreation industry I can't help being wildly excited. In June the first team of African-American climbers will attempt to reach the summit of Alaska's Mount McKinley, the tallest peak in North America. Also known as Denali at 20,328 feet this mountain is literally the highest physical point anyone can achieve in the United States. In 1964 along with 14 other climbers Charles Crenchaw became the first African-American to reach the top of Mount McKinley, also known as Denali. As climate change and a warming planet make the weather more hospitable to the dreaded pine beetle, it’s continuing to lay waste to millions of trees across the west. Surrounded by a tremendous fire hazard, as well as an overwhelming surplus of perfectly good wood, land owners and the local bureau...

Filmmaker Anson Fogel wants to show a side of the American West that few people get to see in the movies. Having grown up around the rural farming and ranch communities of the Wyoming and Colorado the head of Forge Motion Pictures has a different perspective to share that runs contrary to the romantic imagines most often projected on the silver screen. "The west is seen as this amazing place where we all go to live these wonderful healthy perfect lives outside and we do a million incredible things...

Until we're directly affected by a global crisis seldom are we prompted to take action and make a change. Though the environment is suffering the devastating impact of humanity's rush to extract the Earth's remaining non-renewable energy supply most of us are willing to allow the pollution to continue. That is until it strikes us where we live. Backyard is a new film project under development by Deia Scholsberg that aims to raise awareness for the harmful effects of fracking on the land and the communities where the...
