The Adventure Gap Scholarship Fund

At the turn of the New Year my publisher let me know that the Mountaineers Books had sold more than 1,000 copies of The Adventure Gap. As we head into 2015 I am committed to keep the momentum moving forward and I want to encourage those of you who have purchased and enjoyed this book to share your interest and enthusiasm with others. That’s why I’m going to donate $5 of every book sold through this website toward a scholarship fund dedicated to sending at least one inspired young person on an adventure of their own.

The goal is to sell another 1,000 copies of The Adventure Gap and raise $5,000 to put toward the tuition of a National Outdoor Leadership School field course. For $19.95 plus tax and shipping I’ll send you an autographed copy of my book. You can also have it sent as a gift to a young person in need who has demonstrated an interest in outdoor recreation through one of several non-profit organizations I can recommend that work to get kids outside. Your contribution will help to encourage the next generation of environmental stewards that will help to protect and preserve the natural world we love into the future.

If you have already purchased a copy of The Adventure Gap you can help spread the message behind this book through social media. Just post a picture of yourself with the cover or the title page to your Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram accounts with the hashtag #TheAdventureGap. The selfie with the most “likes” across all social networks will receive a free autographed copy of the book to have sent to a young person (23 or under) of their choice. Winners can also elect to have their copy sent to a deserving youth selected from the pool of scholarship applicants. I’ll give away one copy of The Adventure Gap each month through December 31, 2015.

Once the scholarship is fully funded I’ll begin looking for a suitable recipient. Successful applicants, under the age of 23, must have an expressed desired to spend time in nature and meet the minimum requirements of the NOLS course they wish to attend. Applicants should send an academic resume, a cover letter detailing their interest in outdoor recreation and a letter of recommendation from a non-family member. Send applications via email to info@joytripproject.com

The Adventure Gap is the story of the first team of black climbers to attempt a summit of the highest peak in North America. Expedition Denali was created by NOLS in order to introduce and welcome a new generation of young people into the world of adventure so that they might be encouraged to participate in outdoor recreation as a favorite pastime or perhaps a professional career. In the hopes of inspiring minority youth in particular, Expedition Denali and by extension The Adventure Gap aim to present exciting stories of exploration that demonstrate through the lives of real people what is possible when one sets out to achieve even the most ambitious goals. Throughout my life I have been fortunate to receive many opportunities to pursue my interest in outdoor recreation. With your help through The Adventure Gap Scholarship Fund I hope to do the same for others.
