Outdoor Retailer 2014 Day 1 – The Joy Trip Project

After a really long day at the Outdoor Retailer Show I’m up early to head back over to the Marriott for the breakfast meeting of the Conservation Alliance. The keynote speaker is National Geographic Explorer in Residence Wade Davis. His book The Sacred Headwaters is an amazing photo essay that details the struggles of protecting our last remaining pure wilderness areas from destruction and I’m really looking forward to hearing his comments this morning. As the saying goes arrive tired leave inspired!
It’s hard not believe that anything is possible when surrounded by so many inspirational people. I spent the better part of Day 1 following  Sally Jewel, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior and former president of REI as she and members of the Outdoor Industry Association toured the show floor. She laid out an ambitious plan to help encourage the next generation of environmental stewards through a program meant to help young people work, learn, play and serve in the best interests of wilderness. I can only hope that she can muster support from the many companies in the Outdoor Industry upon whose success a thriving natural world depends.
The show this year has truly great energy and I’m excited to share the stories and events from before dawn until way after dark to hopefully offer some of that inspiration to world.
Here’s the next round of photographs shot on Day 1:
