Lum's Labor of Love – The Joy Trip Project

Pink is not my color. But in the interest of saving lives I’m making an investment in a fashionable pink bicycle jersey created by my friend Kay Lum. Her goal is to raise some cash and awareness in the fight to find a cure for breast cancer. You can help too.
Tonight marks the official year-end of Madison’s Wednesday Night Bike Ride series. Every week through the spring summer and fall hundreds of local cyclists gather informally at designated spots around Dane County to spin their wheels. For more than a decade I’ve ridden with Kay and her husband Harry. And when the snow falls we swap out our bikes for skis to skate groomed trails through the Wisconsin winter. Apart from Harry’s great cooking and Kay’s hospitality in throwing wild parties, the Lums are those rare selfless souls who share their gifts with those less fortunate. Two small business owners without a lot of extra bucks lying around they constantly inspire others to follow their example to contribute what they can whenever possible.
“The fact that we don’t have a lot of money means we donate what we can, which is our time and our talent,” Kay said. “It really is a labor of love.”
Earlier this year Kay’s sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Striking so close to home it seemed natural to devote a bit of skill as a graphic designer to make a contribution toward finding a cure. So she created an original work of art for cyclists to help spread the word and make people aware of the health risks women face every day “It’s kind of therapeutic for me too,” Kay said. “Our mom died of breast cancer and now my sister has it. Emotionally it just seemed like the right thing to do.”
The jerseys cost $70. Though not an official fundraiser the proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure foundation. In signature pink each jersey, available in sizes for men and women -with or without sleeves, is designed with positive messages meant to empower the wearer as well as those who see it. And even if you’re unlikely to get breast cancer because you’re a man there’s a good chance that someone you know and love will. Our wives, mothers, sisters, nieces, cousins, friends and associates are all at risk. And should one day they succumb to this horrible disease I for one hope that researchers will be well on their way toward finding a cure.  By making a small contribution, wearing Kay’s jersey or at the very least sharing a link to this story with your friends you can help save their lives. ~JEM
