Just how do you loose a river? In his new film “Chasing Water” National Geographic Photographer Peter McBride follows the course of the Colorado only to see it disappear. As much as we might get ourselves lost in the details of the science behind this frightening phenomenon, McBride allows us to make a personal connection with a rapidly depleting natural resource, fresh water.

Living simply isn’t as easy as it looks, or is it? A new film by Allie Bombach and Red Reel Productions explores the transient lifestyles of people who live out on the open road actively in pursuit of their dreams. In a documentary filmed in a style true to its subject the short feature 23 Feet delivers the promise that happiness is often discovered in what remains of the trivial though seemly important things we leave behind.

I’d feel weird reading someone else’s mail. So I’m more than a little uncomfortable writing a critical review of “The Love Letter,” the newest short film by producers Fitz Cahall and Bryan Smith. Premiering today online it’s an intimate story of togetherness in the pursuit of adventure as Fitz and his wife Becca make their way along 300 miles of rugged trails in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Though beautiful in its imagery and poetic narration the film is hard to watch due to its sheer lack of conflict.

For Ruedi Beglinger and his family mountain culture is a way of life. Even after the tragic deaths of 7 friends and clients during an avalanche in the Canadian Rockies this climber and backcountry ski guide reconciles his love of high alpine snowfields with extreme caution and great respect for the inherent danger that surrounds him. A Life Ascending is a film directed Stephen Grynberg that illustrates the emotional heights and depths of an existence that offers incredible reward delicately balanced with great risk.

The world of adventure has always meant life on the edge. But now that so many of our planet’s wonders have been thoroughly explored the boundaries that separate mundane and magnificent are getting harder and harder to find. That’s why National Geographic Adventure has commissioned a new video series called Fringe Elements. These documentary shorts profile those athletes who are pushing the envelope of endurance sports to a whole new level.

In the best mountain adventure films a successful summit bid is never a forgone conclusion. Throughout the 15-pitch climb of The Asgard Project, a movie by Alastair Lee, you’re left wondering, “Are these guys are going to make it?” That riveting sense of anticipation will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. And though it received the prize for Best Film on Climbing at the 2010 Banff Mountain Film Festival even those with no alpine aspirations will enjoy The Asgard Project. It’s simply a great piece of cinema.
