Thursday, July 9, 2020 will be the 56th Anniversary of Charles Madison Crenchaw’s historic summit of Denali. As the first Black person to reach the highest peak in North America this remarkable event is particularly significant because it occurred just seven days after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law. Crenchaw’s climb of Denali personified the dream described a year earlier by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the March on Washington. Through his skills as an alpinist and his strength of will, Crenchaw ascended Denali as any free person should. Without regard for his race he climbed the mountain to fulfill the promise of the American dream to pursue happiness and not be judged by the color of his skin but by the content of his character.
To celebrate this momentous occasion The Joy Trip Project will host a free online screening of the film “An American Ascent”. This documentary follows the story of the first all-Black team of climbers to attempt a summit of Denali in 2013. The film will be available to stream on Vimeo with a special link and password for registered viewers. On the evening of July 9th at 8:00PM Central Time members of the Expedition Denali team will gather via Web-Ex teleconference for a panel discussion of the film and a conversation about the significance of these historical events on the current social climate. Our panelists will include Tyrhee Moore, Stephen DeBerry, Scott Briscoe, Rosemary Saal and Stephen Shobe. We will also be joined by the expedition’s creator Aparna Rajagopal-Durbin. Moderated by James Edward Mills this even is supported in part by The North Face and YETI
The panel discussion is presented in partnership with the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies.
