Ask any multi-tasker, hands free is always the way to go. So when the makers of the Capture Camera Clip asked me to test out their new device I immediately jumped at the chance. This sleek little gizmo makes the camera neck strap obsolete with a clever quick-release system that allows a photographer to snap his trusty SLR reporting tool on a waist belt or shoulder strap for easy and immediate access. In principle the Capture works beautifully, but after several weeks of use I discovered that its primary flaw isn’t the clip itself but whatever you choose to attach it to.
The Capture can be put on just about any stretch of webbing you might use to hump a heavy backpack or keep from dropping your pants. It’s made of super sturdy mostly-metal materials and a mounting system that holds your precious camera in place is that’s pretty much bomb proof. The only thing more impressive is how quickly it clips into place. It’s just as quick on the draw, so you don’t have to go fumbling for it to get that next great shot. Really the only problem is the sheer weight of your camera tends to pull the Capture down causing your belt to sag. Especially if you’ve got a big lens it feels like any moment it’s going to fall right off!
Fortunately perception is not reality. I walked around with a Cannon 40D on my hip for four straight days trolling the aisles and reporting at the Outdoor Retailer Show. Despite my heavy camera and droopy drawers the Capture performed beautifully. The following week also used it attached to my waist belt while backpacking through the Cascade Range of Washington state. It was definitely a much better alternative to having it looped around my neck.
