The Buffalo Soldiers on TTBOOK

IMG_4980The National Parks episode of “To The Best of Our Knowledge” airs on September 27th! To coincide with the premiere of “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, ” TTBOOK a production of Wisconsin Public Radio and Public Radio International, is devoting an hour to stories of our favorite wild and scenic places. The Joy Trip Project is proud to have contributed a segment detailing a brief history of The Buffalo Soldiers, African-American horsemen of the 9th and 10th divisions of the U.S. Cavalry. More than 400 of them actively patrolled Yellowstone, Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks at the turn of the century to help set the standard of the modern rangers of the National Park Service. How ironic it is today that so few African-Americans and other people of color visit the very institutions our ancestors help to create.
